Mistral AI Introduces Mistral Large, a Powerful LLM Challenging Industry Leaders
Mistral AI, a startup based in France, has unveiled its latest large language model (LLM) called Mistral Large, which the company claims can rival several top AI systems currently available in the market. According to Mistral AI, Mistral Large has demonstrated impressive performance in language understanding tests, surpassing most major LLMs, with the exception of OpenAI's recently launched GPT-4. The model has also shown strong capabilities in maths and coding assessments.
Guillaume Lample, co-founder and Chief Scientist at Mistral AI, stated that Mistral Large represents a significant improvement over the company's earlier Mistral models. Alongside the LLM, Mistral AI has also introduced a chatbot interface called Le Chat, which allows users to interact with the system in a manner similar to ChatGPT.
Mistral Large boasts an extensive vocabulary of over 20,000 words and fluency in multiple languages, including English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. Unlike the company's first model, which was open-source, Mistral Large's code remains proprietary, following the approach of other companies like OpenAI.
In late 2021, Mistral AI secured nearly $500 million in funding from investors such as Nvidia and Andreessen Horowitz. The company has also recently entered into a partnership with Microsoft to provide access to Mistral Large through Azure cloud services.
However, Microsoft's €15 million investment in Mistral AI is expected to face regulatory scrutiny from the European Union, which is already investigating the tech giant's ties to OpenAI, the creator of market-leading models like GPT-3 and GPT-4. The European Commission has announced its intention to review Microsoft's deal with Mistral, potentially leading to a formal probe that could jeopardize the partnership. Microsoft has already invested around $13 billion in OpenAI, and these links are also under review in both the EU and UK for potential anti-competitive concerns.
Mistral Large's pricing starts at $8 per million tokens of input and $24 per million output tokens. The system will utilize Azure's computing infrastructure for training and deployment, as Mistral AI and Microsoft collaborate on AI research.
While third-party rankings have not yet fully evaluated Mistral Large, the company's earlier model, Mistral Medium, ranked 6th out of more than 60 language models. With the release of Mistral Large, Mistral AI appears well-positioned to challenge the dominant players in the increasingly competitive AI industry.
